The belief that gold and silver rings cannot have the same quality of gems, design and craftsmanship has existed for decades. Kaisilver entered into the online high end jewelry sector in early 2000, this after operating the same business offline for decades. Many jewelers were not happy with the fact that, Kaisilver chose to educate jewelry and gem lovers about issues that were often hidden before this. The point is that a gold ring and the same ring crafted in 925 sterling silver, can and should have the same quality standards. In the same way, there is no reason why expensive gems cannot be set in silver rings. There is also nothing wrong in setting affordable gems like amethyst, black onyx or even agate in gold.

That rings crafted in gold would  be much more expensive than, similar rings crafted in silver is no secret. It is our strong opinion that, clients should be allowed to select gold or silver for their rings or other jewelry, based on their preference or budget. When you talk about finely crafted silver rings, they obviously cannot be very cheap. Most silver rings that you come across in markets, would be mass produced in factories with quality standards that cater to mass markets. When you talk about Kai Silver rings in silver or gold, it implies rings crafted by highly skilled artisans in Thailand, optimized metal (gold or silver) weight and natural gems handpicked by gem experts.

When you talk about silver rings, the metal standard is referred to as 925 silver sterling silver - both have the same technical specifications. Pure silver is basically too soft to deliver sturdy jewelry. The metal is mixed with a few other metals to generate a harder alloy. The global standard for the proportion of pure silver and the 'other' metals is 92.5% to 7.5% where, silver is the larger component. Jewelers use the '925' stamp to denote sterling silver, older jewels are often marked 'SS' to denote the same thing. All Kai Silver rings (and other jewelry) crafted in silver, confirm to the sterling silver standard.

So while silver rings are generally crafted in 925 silver, gold offers many more options - we briefly talk about them here. We just talked about pure silver being too soft to craft sturdy jewelry, the same is true of pure gold too. Gold rings are normally explained as 10k, 14k and 18k gold. The numbers denote the proportion of gold and other metals in the allow. Pure gold is referred to as 24k gold - alloy standards use this as a base. So when you hear about a 10k gold ring, the metal would have 10 parts of gold and 14 parts of the other metals. Similarly the alloy used to craft 14k rings, would have 14 parts of gold and 10 parts of other metal. It is obvious that the amount of gold present in the alloy, increases as you move from 10k to 14k and from that to 18k - this is also how the cost of the alloy moves. Remember that this whole thing about defining gold alloys, came up with the objective of increase metal (alloy) hardness. Not very tough to understand that the alloy is softer as, the proportion of the gold in the alloy moves up. So 14k gold is harder than 18k gold and 10k gold is harder than both 14k and 18k gold. Kaisilver experts recommend 14k gold rings, this because the alloy combines the right degree of gold content and alloy hardness.

Another difference between gold rings as compared to rings crafted in silver is that, gold offers a choice of 3 colors - this even when we know that pure gold is always yellow. We spoke about metals that are added to pure gold to increase its hardness. The color of the resulting gold alloy could be yellow  (normal), white or pink - this depending on the specific metals selected. There is a misunderstanding that yellow gold rings are tougher as compared to pink or white gold, this is really not true. We explained in the previous paragraph that, the hardness of the gold alloy depending on the 10k, 14k and 18k specification. Within each of these standards, the hardness of the gold alloy remains the same irrespective of its color. When you order a gold ring from us, you always get a choice of 10k, 14k and 18k in white, yellow or pink gold.

There is something about 925 silver rings that does not apply to gold rings - this relates to tarnish. All silverware including jewelry, slows a slight color discoloration over time. The rate of tarnishing depends on a number of factors including the air, climate, water composition etc. Technically this is an easy thing to handle if, the jewel is polished just as the tarnish sets in. Any silver (jewelry grade) polishing lotion, fabric or liquid can be used to do the job. This is something that you should keep in mind when buying a silver ring. Allowing the tarnish to settle and develop, can make it stubborn. Silver rings that end up in this condition, are likely to require professional help to be cleaned. And if you are told that plating a silver ring, prevents it from tarnishing - here is something that you should know. Any plating on silver rings (or other silver jewelry) will wear off after a while, this will happen in patches. At that point the ring would appear quite shabby and cleaning the ring would be a nightmare. We therefore recommend that, silver rings be left with no plating - they would tarnish but cleaning and polishing would be something that, you could handle on your own.

There was a time when gold rings would be worn for formal wear and 925 silver rings, were reserved for casual wear. While this differentiation has not disappeared entirely, there has been a significant change in mindsets. Quite a few of the wedding and engagement ring orders that we get each year, are ordered as silver rings. While gold rings might still dominate the overall scene, acceptance of silver matrimonial rings is surely on the rise. At Kaisilver we do not distinguish between gems suited for silver and those reserved for gold jewelry. You can pick just about any gem or diamond that you fancy, the choice of metal is not related to the gems that you choose.
